It's no secret that The Market Basket Co loves handmade products. There is something truly special about taking home an item that has been hand crafted with love and precise care. During our time on the weekend market circuit, we have seen many beautiful pieces made by some incredibly talented people from all over the country. So we thought we'd take a lap around Australia and detail the best handmade market from each state. QLD – Airlie Beach: The Handmade Expo Running for over a decade now, Airlie Beach is just 1 of 10 of the Handmade Expo markets held across Queensland. Selling exclusively handmade products, this market also includes food, art, and craft supplies.
NSW – Newcastle: The Olive Tree Market An ‘Art & Design’ market, this Newcastle-based market celebrates local creators and designers. Many small businesses have used Olive Tree as their launching pad, so visiting these markets is a chance to see the Hunter’s ‘next big thing’ firsthand.
Part of the Craft Markets franchise, the Mornington Peninsula Markets is a place where everything is hand-made, home-made or home grown. Musicians and buskers are also scattered amongst the stalls along the beautiful lawns of the racecourse, creating the perfect ambience for a winter morning’s market.
Bowerbird is the big mamma of markets, across South Australia and the nation. With over 150 stallholders, these markets are held twice a year, and you are guaranteed to find the most beautiful handmade masterpieces here. With entry only being $5, you will definitely get value for money with this one.
Hobart plays host to one of many Maker’s Markets held across the country. Like many Maker’s Markets, Hobart pays homage to its local artists and designers, showcasing some of the community’s most exquisite creations.
WA – Perth: Perth Maker’s Market Another branch of the Maker’s Market, Perth celebrates local creators by only selling items handmade in Western Australia. The markets alternate between two locations, with a mixture of day and night-time markets. Coupled with live music, delicious food, and panoramic views of the Swan River, this market could take the cake for the best market in Perth.
Handmade Canberra is another large-scale market, with over 270 stalls offering gifts, homewares, fashion, and food. Many Australian designers launch their business or new products at this market, giving you the opportunity to meet many creative folk from all over the country.
NT: Darwin: Malak Evening Markets The Malak Markets are a local and organic farmer’s market, showcasing fresh produce from across the region. Committed to sustainability, Malak Marketplace also have several practices in place that ensure their stallholders assist in improving the market’s eco-footprint, with a focus on environmentally friendly water, energy, and waste management.
